Do You Need A Different Jump Rope for Crossovers?

The controversial double under crossover was introduced at the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games, but would later be modified to a single under variation for the 2023 Quarterfinals. The shift away from only testing double unders as a jump rope skill has made waves in the CrossFit space, but it shouldn’t be surprising if we look back at some of the signs. Log In. During this time, Buddy Lee’s Jump Rope Certification was one of these preferred courses, along with a long list of others. Lee has been the subject matter expert on jumping rope for CrossFit dating back to 2007, where he’s taught the endless variety and creativity of movement the jump rope can develop. The video below shows Lee introducing a group to double unders with a jaw-dropping display of his skills. During the 2023 Quarterfinals, top athletes and Adrian Bozman used a beaded rope for single under crossovers in individual event three. Bozman, the Director of Competition for the CrossFit Games (and programmer of these workouts) even utilized the beaded rope during a demonstration video to show how reps should be counted for crossover single unders. An experiment: I recently ordered a beaded rope and programmed single under crossovers at my affiliate, CrossFit Greenville as a way to test which style of rope worked best and to get feedback from members. During the warm-up, we did a tabata jump rope segment to allow time to practice the movement before the actual workout. I experimented with both ropes during the tabata and found it to be clear that using the heavier beaded rope was much easier. Afterwards, I had members test it out and the feedback was unanimous towards using the beaded rope. Beaded rope for single under crossovers: The weight and drag offered by beaded ropes helps with slowing down and controlling the rope. You need to maintain tension to keep a steady cycle rate and be able to cross the arms and pull them back into position. Speed rope for double under crossovers: The double under crossover requires a faster cycle rate and less drag, which makes a typical speed rope more advantageous for this variation of the movement. I tried the double under version with the beaded rope and it felt far more difficult than using a speed rope. Most of the jump ropes you’ll see in affiliates are thin speed ropes that move extremely quickly. This isn’t a bad thing, but if someone doesn’t have experience jumping rope, it can be very difficult to learn the coordination and timing with little-to-no weight in the rope. While I don’t think it’s a worthwhile expense for affiliate owners to purchase beaded ropes solely to participate in single under crossovers, I do think they would be valuable to have if utilized correctly. Beginners can use them to learn the basics, while also helping teach more advanced athletes skills beyond double unders. Learning to flow, skip and play with different movements like those shown in the Buddy Lee video is only going to make the sport-specific variations feel easier, as body awareness and competence with the jump rope itself improves. The bottom line: It seems that crossover variations may be here to stay, so it’s safe to say that our warm-up skill time can be better allocated then hopping on a bike or rower for a few minutes. Jumping rope helps build the feet and calves while training the aerobic system, something that translates well to better running mechanics. It’s also a fantastic way to mix things up and let your members have fun experimenting and being creative.
