Noah Ohlsen Shares Insights from His Career Heading into His Final Year as an Individual

If you know anything about the CrossFit Games, you’ve probably heard the name Noah Ohlsen once or twice. He has participated in thirteen CrossFit Opens, won the Spirit of the Games last year, and is on his way to his tenth year competing in the CrossFit Games. Someone with that much experience has so many insights to share. I sat down with Noah to get the goods and better paint a picture into his approach to nutrition, lifestyle, and mindset with his drive to be competitive in the sport. We started with diet history He started doing CrossFit in 2010, which was his sophomore year in High School The Paleo and Zone diets were very popular as the sport of CrossFit emerged where he focused on real whole foods, less processed foods, and little carbohydrates He went through a six year gap of a middle ground where he didn’t focus too much on nutrition but used things like a meal prep services for convenience In the last 2-3 years he has been the most dialed in with regards to being prepared, tracking macros, and achieving specific body composition goals What does a typical day of eating look like for Noah? He mentioned his gym buddies at Peak, like Anikha Greer, likes to jokingly make fun of him because his structure looks something like this: A big breakfast Train from 11am-4pm with maybe little snacks like applesauce packets or carb/protein powders throughout, if anything Then he goes home to more snacks, a big dinner, and maybe some more snacks after that But he added, he has always been this way and doesn’t really enjoy eating a ton during or in between sessions So, what are Noah’s current macros? 550g Carbs / 100g Fat / 200g Protein What about weighing, measuring, and tracking? Does he do it all year round and has he always done it? He typically takes a break from tracking August–December as a break immediately following the Games, which is his peak time of the entire season He is more consistent and diligent with it now that he ever has been Ohlsen wanted to note that even the times when he wasn’t dialed in, it may have been worth the pay off of spending the time with his friends and family and not being so isolated in that moment for something like hitting specific macro targets Last year at the 2022 CrossFit Games, it was his first year ever that all his meals were packed and prepared prior and he had four shaker bottles ready each day with his protein and carb powders, making him feel very well fueled He also noted a compliment his coach Max El-Hag gave him recently upon seeing him pull a snack bag full of goodies about how far he’s come and really matured in the sport in his preparedness and readiness to be set up for success for the day. What about warm-ups, cool-downs, and recovery practices? Noah goes on to discuss how as he’s gotten a little bit older in the sport, he’s had to spend more time warming up and his body needs more of a warm up for him to get started and feel better. Every day he implements some type of general warm up (things like inchworms, spidermans, etc) to just get his body moving before he goes into any type of specific warm up for what he has that day. He admits he’s not as disciplined about the cool downs. After some long hours in the gym, he’s ready to go home to Joanne and Max for the day and spend some quality time with them. When it comes to recovery he does enjoy a sauna session or cold plunge like the rest of us, but has also spent more work on fueling properly and making sure he’s getting better at eating immediately after training and having those little snacks during, if he can. Ohlsen adds that spending time with the people he cares about most helps tremendously with unwinding, relaxing, and recovering from the day. He shares a memory of staying in Alpharetta, GA for six months to dial in on all things needed to be an athlete. He made great progress, felt like he was super disciplined, but ended up feeling pretty empty. Reassuring him that being with his people and doing fun things really helps him feel better overall. We all have those days that you don’t feel great. What does Noah do to handle it? He recommends simply getting moving. “Give yourself the chance to go do whatever it is you gotta do before you decide you’re not going to do it cause you never know how it’s going to go”, states Olhsen. He further explains that once you get moving, you can have a better gauge of how your body is truly feeling, and you might just end up having a great training day or spark a great conversation or interaction at the gym you would have missed out on had you not shown up. As his last year competing as an individual, what does Noah Ohlsen want to be remembered for in the CrossFit space He wants to be remembered for being more impactful on others than just an athlete or his placement on the leaderboard. To prove that you can be successful and have balance and experience joy and positivity while working through any tough process or pursuit. Which leads to his creation of his slogan “Happy But Hungry” which he hopes can help other people get through any hard obstacle.
